Radioactive Materials

The Trusted Choice for the
Carriage of Radioactive Goods since 1988

Furnells has been transporting Radioactive Materials since 1988 and have long been a trusted choice for different industry sectors including energy, defence and medical.

As the nuclear sector is a highly regulated industry we are regulated by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). Our last inspection in October 23 gave us a green rating across all areas of compliance for the transport of nuclear waste. We have also been part of the Nuclear Waste Services framework Agreement since April 2015.

Our management systems provide clear safety and procedure guidelines and incorporate instructions and training, movement and transport plans as well as emergency and contingency arrangements.

We have our own ‘in-house’ Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA), fully accredited since 1999, managing risk and monitoring compliance of the legal requirements governing the carriage of dangerous goods. We also have a qualified ‘in-house’ Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) supported by an external Radiation Protection Advisor at Aurora. These roles ensure we are limiting radioactive exposure to our drivers and to the public.

Our driving team are trained and qualified under ADR regulations in Class 7 for radioactive and nuclear materials. They are also registered with the UK Health Safety Agengy (UKHSA) using Thermo Luminescent Devices (TLD’s) to monitor dose rates.

All of our rigid vehicles (from 3.5te – 18te GVW) have large tail-lift platforms (up to 2.60metres deep) and range from 500kg through to 3000kg safe working loads (SWL). We also have two Side-loader trailers for the movement of ISO shipping containers.
