20 years since Buncefield

It is hard to believe that 20 years have gone by since the Buncefield explosion happened in Hemel.
A massive fuel-air explosion occurred at the Buncefield oil storage terminal in Hemel Hempstead. The blast which measured 2.4 on the Richter scale, was caused by an overflow of petrol from a storage tank due to failed safety systems and was captured on our CCTV.
The Furnells team moved out of Enterprise House and relocated to David’s house for a couple of days while the building was being checked, before being deemed ready and safe to return.
Thankfully Enterprise House only had minimal damage compared to other businesses on the industrial estate in Hemel. The premises of 20 businesses were destroyed, and another 60 were heavily damaged and became unusable.
David Furnell was able to sell the CCTV footage to media outlets around the world to raise money for the community affected by the disaster and the footage became widely known as it was one of the clearest recordings of the initial explosion.
