Meeting London's Direct Vision Standard (DVS)

Since 2021, we have been working with Cameramatics, a digital software company providing technology to meet London's Direct Vision Standard (DVS).

This is a permit system that requires the positioning of cameras around larger vehicles to provide ‘indirect vision’ where direct vision is not possible. It was introduced in 2018 as part of the Mayor of London’s Vision Zero goal to help to eliminate death and serious injury on London’s roads by 2041.

Our vehicles were all fitted with cameras to meet the standard which was a costly but necessary project. We have been pleased to hear that incidents of serious injury by HGV’s have reduced by 64%, with numbers falling from 48 to 17 across London, since this scheme has been introduced.

Following this success, a new Progressive Safe System (PSS) is being introduced from October this year which will require vehicles to have updated cameras.

These cameras will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to perceive the differences between vulnerable road users (VRUs) and street furniture such as lampposts and bollards.

There will also be an increased warning system to alert drivers when moving off as most incidents occur as a result of a collision with the centre or nearside edge of the front of the vehicle.

We are pleased to be working with Cameramatics again this year to ensure we are compliant with the new system ahead of the 28th October deadline. We hope that not only will the system prevent the potential for any unintentional collision on the roads in London it will also help to prevent fault if a collision does occur.
