‘WEEE’ do waste

One of our long standing customers of 10 years plus is the well-known company  Biffa. We have been working with them during this time to transport waste and recyclable materials from their customer base, located mainly in and around the South East, for onward disposal at their site in Welham Green.

Our driver Jack is often on the list for these jobs and has developed a good rapport and relationship with the office at Welham Green, understanding their processes and procedures, which for a contractor on their work is a must.

Biffa Waste transported by Furnells hazardous

When picking up waste you never know what you may be carrying. The waste goods/materials can range from batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and empty paint pots and are transported in a plethora of receptacles, such as drums and waste safes. These are secured in transit using 2te rated standard ratchet straps.

Biffa are governed under the Hazardous Waste Directive 2005 which promotes safer practices, reduces environmental impact and ensures public health.

As all our drivers are ADR trained they have the required knowledge and skills to deal with any collection that may be classed as hazardous goods. This includes quantities on board a vehicle that may tip into the dangerous goods range when certain thresholds per transport unit are met. Our lorries also have the prerequisite placards as required, which makes us ready to deal with whatever comes our way.

We have also been collecting electrical waste for many years as part of the WEEE Directive. The amount of electrical and electronic equipment generated every year in the EU is increasing rapidly and is now one of the fastest growing waste streams. It includes a large range of devices such as mobile phones, computers, televisions, fridges, household appliances, lamps but also medical devices and photovoltaic panels – effectively anything with a plug.

We have collected and transported WEEE waste for Biffa, along with many other customers including Bio-rad, who often need UPS batteries picked up from hospital sites.

So waste is definitely one of our things and we like to think ‘WEEE do waste well’ (pun intended)!
